Explain what the open document means for a request

Explain what the open document means for a request in Cortex Chat: practical steps, setting explanations, result checks and troubleshooting.

The workspace can include open-document context in an assistant request. This helps ground a request such as reviewing the current proposal, but it is important to confirm which document is open and whether the request is read-only or an edit.

Before you start

An app name opens the product surface, while its settings control shows connection and Sidekick access. The product may be visible to you even when the assistant has no permitted tool for the action you want. Read the account identity, phase and explicit guidance before reconnecting. Some setup flows need tools saved first and account access saved afterwards. For embedded apps, verify the account and open record rather than assuming the context from another tab. If an action changes an external record, inspect that record afterwards; a completed app load or a confident assistant reply is only part of the evidence.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the intended document in Docs and verify its title.
  2. State what the assistant should do with that document and what must remain unchanged.
  3. Check the answer or saved edit against the actual document rather than an assumed context.

What the settings mean

Control or stateMeaning
App surfaceThe interface you can open and use.
ConnectionThe service/account link and its current state.
Account accessThe read/draft/write/send allowance supported by that app.
Tool selectionThe particular operations saved for the assistant.

Check the result

The assistant response is grounded in the intended document and matches the requested action.

If it does not work

If the wrong document was active, correct the context before another edit. Do not rely solely on the phrase this document when several surfaces are open.

Continue with the right context
